ExtremeTech has a good article with tips concerning upgrading a graphics Card.

One tip that I haven't seen in the article is to replace the fan that comes with the card, from experience and advice, the stock cards are bottom of the barrel, inefficient, noisy and cheap. Replacement fans aren't expensive, and are highly recommended if you're really splashing out on a new card.
